The Sudanese government has accused the United Nations of inaction in the face of the worsening humanitarian disaster in the city of El Fasher, which has been under a suffocating siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since May 2024. It warned that the silence of the international community has encouraged an escalation in crimes against civilians.
Minister of Culture and Information and official government spokesperson, Khalid Al-Ayesir, stated in a press release received by Voice Al-Hamish that the UN Office for Human Rights has merely expressed “concern” without taking any practical steps to protect the hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in the capital of North Darfur.
Al-Ayesir explained that the Sudanese government has been sending humanitarian aid via airdrops to alleviate the suffering, while some countries, on the other hand, are supplying the RSF with weapons and anti-aircraft missiles. which warns of a shift from a ground siege to a full aerial blockade, in a blatant violation of international law.
The minister stressed that “the continuation of this siege constitutes a crime against humanity and requires a clear international stance,” urging the United Nations to take immediate action and end what he described as a “shameful silence and inaction,” and to pressure for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2736, issued on June 13, 2024, which mandates ensuring humanitarian aid access and lifting the siege on civilians.
Al-Ayesir concluded his statement by affirming that protecting the people of El Fasher is a legal and moral responsibility of the international community, warning that ignoring this humanitarian disaster opens the door to further violations against innocent people.
