The Coordination Council of the Jebel Marra and Tawila Emergency Room warned on Thursday that more than 450,000 people have been displaced to the town of Tawila in just two weeks due to escalating attacks and armed violations. The council issued an urgent appeal to humanitarian organizations to intervene, amid what has been described as a “catastrophic” humanitarian situation.
In an urgent report reviewed by Al-Hamesh’s Voice , the council stated that the cumulative number of displaced people in and around the town of Tawila has exceeded 700,000 most of whom are women, children, the elderly, and people with special needs. It noted that the displaced fled from Zamzam Camp, Jebel Marra, and the surrounding villages.
The report explained that large numbers of displaced people are sleeping in the open or in abandoned buildings, with a complete lack of protection and privacy. They are also facing a severe shortage of food and clean drinking water, which has led to the spread of waterborne diseases.
The council described the health situation in Tawila as “extremely critical” due to a shortage of medicine, absence of medical personnel, and limited available healthcare resources despite the relative stability of the security situation in the town, which has allowed for the reception of large numbers of displaced individuals.
The council pointed to the absence of any effective response from UN and international organizations so far, despite repeated appeals. It confirmed that the current efforts are being carried out by grassroots emergency rooms and a few international organizations, in collaboration with the local community.
The Emergency Council called for urgent humanitarian intervention, the provision of relief aid to the displaced, and the establishment of additional reception centers, with direct coordination with representatives of the emergency rooms in Jebel Marra and Tawila to ensure effective distribution of assistance.
