The Sudanese Security and Defense Council has decided to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and to withdraw both the Sudanese embassy and consulate general. The decision comes in response to what the council described as the UAE’s ongoing aggression against Sudan through its direct support for the rebel RSF.
In an official statement, the Council said that the United Arab Emirates has, for over two years, supported a local proxy – the RSF – , which it labeled a “terrorist” group. It accused the UAE of arming RSF and providing it with political cover in an attempt to destabilize Sudan and undermine its territorial integrity.
The statement pointed out that after the rebel RSF suffered significant losses at the hands of the Sudanese Armed Forces, the UAE escalated its intervention by increasing the supply of advanced strategic weapons to the RSF, which were used to target vital and service-related facilities across the country.
The statement indicated that the attacks included oil and gas warehouses, the Port and Airport of Port Sudan, power stations, and hotels, which endangered the lives of millions of civilians and threatened regional and international security, particularly in the Red Sea region.
The Council affirmed that Sudan retains its full right, under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, to defend itself by all possible means to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to ensure the continued delivery of humanitarian aid.
The Security and Defense Council praised the sacrifices of the armed forces, police, security forces, and popular resistance, commending the resilience of the Sudanese people, and reaffirming that the state is capable of deterring aggression and securing the country.
