Field sources told “Al Hamish’s Voice” that the Sudanese army carried out on Monday morning its first airdrop in a long time in the city of Al Fashir, North Darfur State, after successfully destroying an air defense system belonging to the RSF militia that had been obstructing such operations.
The sources explained that the defense system had been positioned east of Al Fashir and was targeted yesterday, paving the way for the airdrop operation carried out this morning.
A circulated video clip showed scenes related to the operation, in which a military aircraft dropped supplies for the forces stationed inside the city, which has been witnessing fierce battles in recent days against the militia’s attempts to storm it.
The operation is seen as a significant turning point after months without any airdrops due to the intensity of the imposed siege. It sparked great joy among the residents, who have been enduring extremely harsh humanitarian conditions.
Al Fashir is considered the last major city in the Darfur region outside the militia’s control, making it a main arena of the conflict that has been ongoing for more than a year. The army, along with the joint force of the armed struggle movements, has managed to repel repeated attacks in recent days.
The United Nations had recently warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in the city, where more than one million people are living under a suffocating siege, facing severe shortages of food and medicine as well as the collapse of basic services.
The Sudanese army affirmed that its operations will continue in Darfur and Kordofan, vowing to thwart any attempt by the Rapid Support Forces to impose new realities on the city or break the resilience of its residents.
