The United Nations affirmed in a press conference at its headquarters in New York that it is following with deep concern the developments in Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region and the city of Al Fashir, which are experiencing dire humanitarian conditions as a result of the ongoing war.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the organization is making intensive efforts to coordinate humanitarian aid and ensure its safe delivery to civilians, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access.
He added that the UN is working with partners to assess damage to infrastructure, hospitals and water supplies, stressing that civilians must be central to any political solution to the crisis.
Farhan Haq also urged the international community and member states to increase financial and political support for Sudan, noting that the available resources are insufficient to cover the growing needs amid the ongoing conflict.
He concluded by stressing that the organization will continue to issue regular statements and updates on developments in Sudan, and that it stands ready to cooperate with all local and regional partners to alleviate the suffering of civilians.
