The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown, strongly condemned what she described as the “deliberate and repeated targeting of civilians” in North Darfur State, stressing that such attacks constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Brown said that drone attacks targeted Daraja Oula area in the city of Al Fashir on the evening of October 10 and early the following day, where internally displaced persons were taking shelter. The attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 57 civilians, including women and children. She noted that preliminary reports hold the RSF responsible for carrying out these attacks.
The statement added that between October 5 and 8, the city witnessed a series of strikes attributed to the RSF, including the shelling of the Saudi Hospital -the last major medical facility still operating in Al Fashir- which left 53 civilians dead and more than 60 others injured. It stressed that the attack on this vital facility represents “a devastating blow to the survival of thousands of civilians trapped in the city.”
The UN official emphasized that hospitals, shelters, and places of refuge must never be targeted under any circumstances. She called for respect for the rules of international humanitarian law and an immediate halt to attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Brown called for independent and impartial investigations into these violations and for those responsible to be held accountable, stressing that “impunity cannot continue while civilians pay the price with their lives.”
The Humanitarian Coordinator affirmed that the United Nations and its partners remain committed to continuing their support for the residents of Al Fashir and all those affected by the conflict across Sudan. She stressed that civilians need protection, humanitarian organizations need access, and above all, the Sudanese people need the violence to stop.
This latest UN condemnation comes amid ongoing drone strikes and artillery shelling on the city of Al Fashir, which has been under a tight siege by the RSF for months. The situation has worsened the humanitarian crisis and caused severe shortages of medical and food supplies in the city.
