Al Fashir Community Kitchen, a grassroots initiative that provides meals to besieged civilians, has issued an urgent appeal to save the residents of Al Fashir from the looming threat of famine endangering hundreds of thousands of lives. The initiative called for the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid and the lifting of the siege that has been imposed on the city for months.
Al-Fashir Community Kitchen official Mahy Eddine Shougar said in a post on his Facebook page that the humanitarian situation in the city is experiencing a “catastrophic and unprecedented deterioration.” He noted that the lack of basic food and water has worsened cases of severe malnutrition, particularly among children, women, and the elderly.
Shougar explained that the siege imposed by the RSF on the city for several months has cut off supply routes and exhausted essential food stocks. He stressed that the situation has reached a stage that “threatens to trigger a full-scale famine at any moment.”
Shougar called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to pressure the RSF to lift the siege on Al Fashir unconditionally, and to allow the entry of aid through all humanitarian corridors.
He called for a concrete plan to conduct air-drops of food and medical aid, warning that civilians under siege can no longer endure prolonged hunger and the exhaustion of supplies.
Shougar warned that any delay in delivering aid “means exposing civilians to death by starvation,” holding morally and legally accountable all those who obstruct the delivery of relief or fail to take urgent action to save lives.
In his statement, Shougar concluded by saying that “the starvation of a child or the death of a woman or an elderly person due to the siege is a humanitarian crime for which those responsible must be held accountable.” He urged the United Nations and international organizations to “save the people of Al Fashir before it’s too late.”
For more than six months, the city of Al Fashir has been under a suffocating siege imposed by the RSF, which have encircled the city from all directions, preventing the entry of food, fuel, and medicine.
The United Nations and international relief agencies warn that the situation in Al Fashir has reached the brink of famine, with health facilities shut down and food stocks depleted. UN reports have documented hundreds of casualties resulting from repeated shelling, along with the spread of malnutrition and disease inside the city.
