The Governor of the Darfur region, Minni Arko Minnawi, has called for handing over the ousted president, Omar Al-Bashir, and his aides to the International Criminal Court and for Sudan to sign the Rome Statute, stressing that “achieving justice is the true gateway to lasting peace in Sudan.”
Manawi said in an interview with the BBC that the situation in the city of Al Fashir is “catastrophic,” holding the RSF responsible for the “deliberate targeting of civilians and infrastructure,” and accusing the United Arab Emirates of providing “direct support to the militia,” which has worsened the humanitarian crisis in North Darfur.
He added that the battle in El Fasher is “unequal,” explaining that “the Sudanese army is suffering from limited capabilities, while the Rapid Support Forces receive generous support from the UAE.” He pointed out that “Abu Dhabi refuses to stop the war and seeks to impose peace on colonial terms.”
Minnawi affirmed that he did not take part in drafting the roadmap submitted by the Sudanese government to the United Nations, explaining that he rejects some of its provisions because they “could pave the way for the division of the country.” He called on the government to “reconsider its relations with the UAE before engaging in any peace process or mediation.”
He also expressed his support for the participation of the National Congress Party — the party of ousted president Omar al-Bashir — in any comprehensive national dialogue, considering them part of the political landscape. However, he firmly rejected the participation of the RSF, “which are committing war crimes against civilians.”
