General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, announced Sudan’s rejection of any role for the international Quad if the United Arab Emirates remains a member, saying that “the whole world has seen that it is the primary supporter of the rebels against the Sudanese state.”
Al-Burhan, speaking during a meeting with senior Armed Forces officers ranked brigadier general and above, attended by members of the Sovereignty Council and top leaders of the security apparatus, said that Sudan cannot accept the UAE as a mediator in the crisis. He noted that the narrative repeatedly promoted by U.S. presidential adviser Masad Boulos about an “Muslim Brotherhood’s infiltration ” into the military institution is “purely an Emirati discourse,” used -according to him- to pressure Washington, Riyadh, and Cairo.
Al-Burhan pointed out that the Armed Forces are capable of reforming their institutions on their own, and that the “Al-Dagalo militia,” as he described it, committed acts of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and looting against civilians, holding foreign countries and political groups responsible for supporting the rebellion. He added that the army “will not accept threats or dictates from any party,” affirming his confidence in his officers and soldiers, and stressing the continuation of operations aimed at reclaiming areas in Kordofan and Darfur that were seized by the rebels.
Al-Burhan’s statements come amid increasing tension between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, following repeated accusations from Khartoum that international actors are supplying the RSF with weapons and equipment, claims denied by Abu Dhabi. International controversy escalated after the recent battles in Al Fashir, which were accompanied by widespread allegations of serious violations against civilians.
The statement coincided with intensive diplomatic efforts led by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt as part of initiatives to revive the truce process. However, the disagreement over the UAE’s role within the Quad remains a major complication in the mediation efforts, at a time when extensive military operations continue in the states of Darfur and Kordofan.
