The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its strong protest against the decision by the UAE authorities to expel most of the staff of Sudan’s Consulate General in Dubai without providing any official reasons. It described the move as a grave violation of the Vienna Conventions governing diplomatic and consular relations.
In a statement issued on Saturday and reviewed by Al-Hamish’s Voice the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the UAE authorities did not stop at the deportation order. Instead, they detained the Sudanese diplomats at Dubai Airport for eight hours after they had completed their departure procedures. During this time, the diplomats were interrogated, and the contents of their phones and electronic devices were inspected. As a result, they missed their flights and were forced to purchase new tickets.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that this incident constitutes a dangerous precedent and reveals a blatant disregard for the UAE’s obligations under international law, which mandates the protection of diplomats and the safeguarding of their immunities and privileges—fundamental pillars of diplomatic relations and international cooperation.
The statement further emphasized that targeting officials responsible for consular services, passport issuance, and personal documentation has a direct negative impact on Sudanese nationals living in the UAE. It described the incident as a move that undermines their rights and interests, in stark contrast to the UAE authorities’ repeated claims of commitment to serving expatriate communities.
