The European Union on Friday condemned what it described as “mass atrocities” committed in Sudan, foremost among them mass rape, starvation, and indiscriminate killings. It emphasized that these violations are being systematically used as weapons of war, particularly targeting women and children, amid a bloody conflict that has raged for two years.
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a statement marking two years since the outbreak of the war. A statement obtained by Al- Hamish’s voice declared that grave violations of international humanitarian law and human rights are widespread across Sudan, particularly in Darfur, Khartoum, and Al-Jazira. These violations include the abduction of children, forced conscription, and ethnically motivated attacks.
He added that the European Union holds the RSF, the Sudanese army, and their allied militias fully accountable, calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the prosecution of those responsible for these crimes, and an end to the culture of impunity.
The EU stressed that Sudan is facing the worst humanitarian catastrophe of the 21st century, pointing to confirmed famine and nearly 25 million people suffering from food insecurity, along with the displacement of more than 12.6 million individuals, including over 3 million refugees.
The statement emphasized the urgent need to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, lift all bureaucratic and administrative obstacles, and ensure the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers.
The European Union also rejected unilateral efforts by the warring parties to form governments, warning against the risk of Sudan’s fragmentation. It reaffirmed its support for an inclusive political process that reflects the Sudanese people’s aspirations for freedom, peace, and justice.
