Four civilians were killed and eight others injured this morning as a result of what has been described as a deliberate artillery shelling carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the northern neighborhoods of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State.
Medical sources at El-Obeid Teaching Hospital reported to Al-Hamish’s voice that the bodies of the victims had arrived at the hospital, noting that some of the injuries are in critical condition. The shelling also caused extensive destruction to several residential buildings.
The Sudanese Doctors Network condemned the shelling in a statement, describing the targeting of residential neighborhoods and civilian gatherings as “a clear violation of humanitarian and international laws.” The statement affirmed that the artillery shelling directly targets densely populated areas, which has led to a rise in the number of casualties in the city.
The network called on the international community to exert serious pressure on the leadership of the RSF and their regional backers to end the ongoing violations against civilians and to halt the artillery shelling being carried out in Darfur, Kordofan, and Khartoum. It also urged an end to the targeting of infrastructure and civilian facilities, and demanded the immediate lifting of the siege imposed on the city of El Fasher.
These developments come amid escalating artillery shelling and random attacks carried out by the RSF in several Sudanese cities, amid human rights calls for urgent action to protect civilians.
