The Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court today issued a verdict against Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, known as “Ali Kushayb,” convicting him by a majority vote of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Darfur region between 2003 and 2004.
Kushayb had denied the charges brought against him, which include mass killings, torture, rape, persecution, and attacks on civilians.
The Court heard testimonies from 56 witnesses who recounted acts of violence committed in the villages, including dawn attacks on civilian populations.
Ali Kushayb’s sentence is expected to be determined at a later date and could reach life imprisonment.
The verdict comes at a time when Sudan is grappling with an ongoing internal conflict, amid growing accusations against the RSF of committing numerous atrocities in Darfur and other regions.
